Welcome to Pragya Jyoti English School, a private school which dedicates its energy and its knowledge to help children from disadvantaged backgrounds to get a good education in Kathmandu, Nepal.
PJES is the acronym of Pragya Jyoti English School; Pragya means « to encourage » and Jyoti is « the light », in Nepali. We are currently looking for volunteers.
In Nepal, there is an unbelievable amount of parents who are unable to send their children to school due to the incredibly low income rate. Therefore, their children often have to endure difficult manual labour during their childhood, or even worse, to spend their youth in the streets begging and robbing. Another major obstacle is that most of the rural population doesn’t understand the value of education.
As the children spend most of their time in the school (Nepali schools are running 6 days per week), and as most of them don't have opportunities for extra activities beside school, we would like to offer them a complete set of sport and recreational activities.(swing, roundabout, basketball, football and badminton surfaces and equipment, table tennis...)
Our Pragya Jyoti English School is the right institute for those parents who want a good education for their children but who cannot afford the boarding school because of the very high tuition fees.Through our deed, we want to end discrimination between rich and poor in the education field. We do believe that it is unfair for a child to be rejected from good schools only because his parents have low earning and cannot pay high tuition fees.
Many children in Nepal grow up in the streets suffering from extreme poverty and a lack of access to Education. The worse can be imagined and expected for them. Being educated is always a first step ahead. Our children are responsible for the future development of our country. They must have the opportunity to get quality and practical education.

At the Pragya Jyoti English School, we have a permanent need of volunteers to help us to provide the best education to our students. We are looking for volunteers to teach any kind of topics (English, art, sport...), organize games and help us in the different projects what are in progress. Every idea is welcome! At the school, we provide accommodation, food, unlimited internet access and will do our best to make your stay unforgettable!

We left work for a voluntary mission in PJES in partnership with DWB. Our purpose, as we were the first volunteers to be welcomed in the school, was to set up the partnership between the French NGO and PJES, but also to report the human, educational and material needs of the school. We think that we have received more than we have brought to them, we learned a lot from this trip and particularly humanely; we were also able to glimpse a
Created in 2002, Pragya Jyoti English School is a private boarding school, based in Kathmandu, which aims at offering poor children and orphans not only a good scholarship but also the opportunity to evolve in a school environment adapted to their needs. Janak Kapali, principal of the school, started the history of the PJES with only 50 children, from Nursery to Grade 3. Step by step, the school evolved and counted, in 2004, 100 children divided up in 6 levels (from Nursery to Grade 5).
Today, PJES welcomes 50 children, all of them are poor. All these pupils are divided up into 7 sections, from Nursery to Grade 4:
In the Nursery, even if the facilities are basic, the staff tries to do the best for the kids teaching them fundamental in Maths, Nepali, English, Rimes and entertaining them with dance or music lessons.
The Lower Kinder Garden (LKG) is the class in which children begin to learn the basics of handwriting and the bases in English, Maths and Nepali. When they are in Upper Kinder Garden (UKG), children are taught Grammar and Punctuation in order to better their handwriting. From Grade 1 to Grade 8, children have English, Maths, Optional Maths (for whose who want to become engineers), Nepali, Science, General Knowledge, Computer Science, Health, Environment & Population, History & Geography, Account and Social Studies lessons. The admission in the upper class is determined by their success at the three exams they take each year.
